The Elderly and Driving

The Elderly and Driving

People often discriminate against older drivers as we all know. I am sure most people know what i am talking about when people say "Grandpa Driver". I think this is another awful stereotype the elderly are put into. Seniors over the age of 65 or 70 are often forced to retake driving test and have more strict rules on when there drivers license get taken away. I think we all have a mental image of someone over the age of 65 that looks very old and in need of help and assistance when that is not always the case we always stereotype people because that is what the media has taught us best to do in America. I think it is a shame and to stereotype against seniors is like stereotyping against your older future self.

  1. My grandpa was a damn good driver but a crazy one at that, even up until the age of 85.

  2. Yeah, but they all have 40,000$ bmw's, I have plenty of reason to hate on the elderly drivers.

  4. i agree and disagree, i do think its unfair that theres discrimination against older people but at the same time there are some cases where some form of recognition of age affecting a persons abilities needs to take place. its up to the dmv and other facilities to study and figure that out though

  5. i agree that they stereotype alot..i also agree that the media is to blame..but u gotta admit that senior people arent as "agile" as younger people, so it might be dangerous

  7. my grandpa's just insane, he'll drive without a seatbelt, disregard all the redlights and flip the bird to everyone who dares to horn.

  8. There is always the public transport. Most important thing is safety really. thx

  9. Most old people can't drive for shit. There's plenty of logic backing the "discrimination". My grandma is 85 and half blind. She still drives. So if you see a maroon Buick Lesabre swerving into your lane at 15MPH, don't worry, she's probably just getting groceries.

  11. It is true that senior citizens are stereotyped for driving really slow, but young drivers are stereotyped for being unsafe drivers too

  12. i believe that older drivers should be required to take periodical driving assessment. if they are able to prove that they can still drive well then i don't see any problem.

  13. I think sometimes it's good to check if the elderly are still able to propel a vehicle, it's not as much a harm as a crash would be.

  14. My grandpa is 72 and he still drives just fine.

  15. It really is a shame. My grandfather is in his 70s and he still drives from Florida to Vermont and back every summer to visit family. He's never been in an accident and he doesn't get tickets. This really is a bad stereotype. +Follow

  16. My granparents are fantastic drivers, but old folk who travel at 15mph in 30mph zones really piss me off. 30mph in a 60mph zone is just wasting everyone's time.

  17. Whereas my grandfather is pretty much blind but argued with the doctor until he gave him his licence back

  18. My grandfather is dead. If he was driving I would be scared, how's that stereotypical.

  19. It really depends on the person, just like everything else. Unless they get like some mortar skill-altering disease or something it doesn't raelly matter.

  20. I must admit my experience with the elderly is severely limited so I wouldn't know who is fit to drive or not...

  21. Well, my granny is 80, but she walks kilometers everyday, it varies between the different people imo.

  22. Stereotyping is terrible but I feel that they should have to retake the test when they get to a certain age. Driving tests change and evolve to reflect the changes in the road use and someone who passed their test 40 years ago might certainly need to freshen up their knowledge of the rules of the road.

  23. I've been driving my grandmother around for the past few years. She keeps saying she's going to get her license so she won't have to keep asking me for rides. I'm a little hesitant about her doing that. I'll probably help her to get a driving assessment.
